Man Attacks Sheriff's Deputy With Machete, Shot Dead

SARASOTA -- A sheriff's deputy is awaiting surgery to save his hand and fingers after he was attacked by a suspected burglar wielding a machete Thursday morning.

The sheriff's office says a man called 911 to report a stranger had entered his efficiency apartment on Richardson Way while he slept. He awoke to see the stranger sharpening his machete with a baseball bat. He called 911 and slipped out of the apartment. Four deputies responded and found the suspect inside the apartment with the machete. Spokesperson Kaitlyn Perez says the man hit one deputy in the hand, causing severe injuries. Deputies shot the attacker at the same instant, then worked to revive him as paramedics arrived. The man died at the scene. Deputies are trying to identify him.

The Sheriff's Office and the State Attorney's Office will investigate the shooting.
