South Florida Lawmaker Refiles Bill To Raise Teacher Pay By Nearly $20,000

A Palm Beach County lawmaker has refiled a bill that would raise Florida's minimum teacher salary to an amount that would be above the national median pay.

The "Save Our Teachers" bill from Jervonte Edmonds of District 88 would pay public school teachers a minimum of $65,000.

In 2020 the state Legislature provided more than $3 billion in an effort to raise the minimum wage for teachers to $47,500.

It's unclear where the state would come up with the funding to hike that by nearly 20 grand.

While the median pay for teachers nationally is between $61,000 and $62,000, Florida's teachers get to keep more of their salaries than their peers in most other states because we don't have a state income tax.
