Lakeland, FL - Governor Ron DeSantis visited Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland for a news conference focused on artificial intelligence, energy policy, and technology development in Florida.

The event was held at the university’s Barnett Applied Research Center and included Florida Secretary of Commerce Alex Kelly, university officials, and other state leaders.

During the appearance, DeSantis discussed legislation related to the growing impact of artificial intelligence infrastructure and the potential effect large data centers could have on residential utility costs.

According to state officials, the governor signed legislation intended to prevent homeowners and residential utility customers from bearing increased energy expenses connected to high demand artificial intelligence operations and large scale data processing facilities.

The measure is part of broader state efforts tied to technology growth and consumer protections.

DeSantis also highlighted Florida Polytechnic University’s role in engineering, cybersecurity, and advanced technology research.

State leaders described the university as an important part of Florida’s expanding focus on workforce development and innovation related to science and technology industries.

Officials said the university continues working with private sector partners on research involving manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and applied engineering projects.

The Lakeland campus has received increasing attention from state officials as Florida promotes economic development tied to technology and infrastructure investment.

The governor’s office did not initially provide detailed information about the event before it was announced publicly.
