You may have heard a story that Lakeland-based Publix supermarkets are doing away with their practice of allowing customers a free slice of meats and cheeses at the deli counter. The Palm Beach Post reached out to Publix and found out that the stories are not correct.
There is a pilot program being attempted at Lakeland area stores only and even if that spreads to Palm Beach County, samples will still be offered.
Bottom line: Publix is attempting to push a "featured cheese of the week", and deli workers are being told in Lakeland only to offer a sample of that cheese first. Customers are able to decline and ask to taste any other item they want and the deli worker will oblige.
