Marijuana Dispensary Set To Open Across From Lake Worth School

As the state administers the medical marijuana amendment, it turns out that a dispensary is set to open in a couple months in Lake Worth, just across the street from a charter school.

The principal of the Academy for Positive Learning on North Dixie Highway is now fighting this.

Under state law, a medical marijuana dispensary may not be located within 500 feet of a school, unless the municipality determines that the location promotes the public health, safety and general welfare of the community.

Renatta Espinoza is concerned that the dispensary could put students at her K through 8th grade school at risk since it's an all-cash business and may attract thieves.  She's called her attorney and plans to get a measurement to see if the two buildings are within 500 feet of each other.

Lake Worth City Manager Michael Bornstein says there shouldn't be any additional risk.

School starts August 14th.
