Protecting The Palm Beaches: Boynton Chief Talks Return Of Red Light Cams

Red light cams in Boynton Beach will again start catching violators in one week, beginning Sept. 1.

The program stopped at the end of 2016 and Police Chief Jeffrey Katz tells me there have been more cars running through the red lights since then.

"We've had some increased red light running over that period of time and that's been shown, not only in Boynton Beach, but in other areas.  I think it's important to point out that the data we get, we get from the vendor."

That vendor is American Traffic Solutions, which leases the cameras to the city.  While there have been legal issues elsewhere over red light cams, Katz says they've always done it differently in Boynton.

"There were a number of safeguards put into place to ensure that citations were issued by members of the police department, as opposed to a private company.  That was one of the big bones of contention I think, legitimately, that people had.  They were receiving citations from people who were not law enforcement.

Warnings will be issued for the first two weeks, while fines will be mailed out to violators beginning September 15th.
