Protecting The Palm Beaches - West Palm Beach Police Chief Sarah Mooney

The Police Chief of West Palm Beach says storm debris is being picked up in a timely manner, though there are some neighborhoods where piles still linger.

Sarah Mooney tells us the streets are safe.  The city was under curfew after Hurricane Irma and the chief says things went well.

"Our officers made, I think it was a total of just under 10 arrests for the curfew.  But it wasn't strictly for the curfew.  Most of them had burglary charges or loitering-type charges that were attached to it where really it was criminal element out that were trying to take advantage of people that were staying home and not out in the street."

Saturday is "Coffee With a Cop" at the McDonald's at the corner of Belvedere Road and Georgia Avenue, where residents can meet her and some of the officers, while enjoying a free cup of coffee.

The police department is also taking part in the "National Night Out Against Crime" Tuesday, October 3rd, with an event at the Palm Beach Lakes Target.

The bomb and drug sniffing dogs will be there, along with department vehicles.

Chief Mooney says these events bring the community together with law enforcement.

"I think it's important for the community to know that the police departments, we're all approachable and I think the manner in which we communicate the more open it is the better our chances are of avoiding some of the things that we've seen throughout the country."

She stresses that people need to understand that "it's not just a bunch of blue uniforms running around, it's actually people in the uniforms that care about what they do day in and day out."
