Folks living around Lake Okeechobee will be among those voting next week in Palm Beach County's municipal elections.
Pahokee has two city commission races with two incumbents vying for re-election.
In Group 1, Vice-Mayor Nathaniel Holmes is a retired Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy who has served on the city commission since 2015, and is running for his second term. Holmes says he wants to bring new businesses into Pahokee.
He's being challenged by Benny Everett, a graduate of Pahokee Middle-Senior High School who works as a guidance counselor at a local elementary school and serves as pastor at a church.
In the Group 2 seat, City Commissioner Felisia Hill is the incumbent, being challenged by Sara Perez who ran unsuccessfully in 2016. Among her campaign platforms, Perez says the educational system should provide more diverse opportunities.
Commissioner Hill has lived in Pahokee her entire life and works as an academic instructor for the company that operates the South Bay Correctional Institution. She's been on the Pahokee commission since 2012 and wants a third term. Hill says she wants to continue moving the city forward.
Pahokee residents also have a charter amendment to vote on, which would require the vice mayor to be appointed by the sitting commissioners each year.
