Environmental Officials Say Algae In Martin County Is Not Toxic

The Department of Environmental Protection says the algae coming from Lake Okeechobee and into waterways on the Treasure Coast has not reached a toxic level.

Crews from the agency and the South Florida Water Management District took samples from Port Mayaca in Martin County, and another area a few miles to the south on Monday.

The presence of the blue-green algae, which has been seen in Lake Okeechobee, and because of water releases from the Lake, flowing down the St. Lucie Canal toward coastal areas in Martin County, renewed worries of a repeat of the 2016 toxic algae crisis.

Scientists took new samples Wednesday near the Palm City Bridge. Those results are not yet in.
