Here Are The New State Laws Taking Effect In Florida On Sunday

New England Towns Struggle With Opioid And Heroin Epidemic

Several new state laws will go into effect this weekend.

Governor Rick Scott signed more than 100 bills into law during the legislative session earlier this year and a number of them are set to take effect this Sunday, July 1.

One of the most notable laws is the one that will limit most prescriptions of painkillers to a three-day supply, in response to the opioid crisis.

Also, Florida will now be the first state to offer student safety scholarships.  This law will allow public school students who are repeatedly bullied or put through a number of other dangerous situations to be able to attend a private school as part of the "Hope Scholarship Program."

The law already on the books that states written threats to kill or conduct a mass shooting are a second degree felony has been amended to include posts on social media.

And the Daylight Saving Time Act goes into effect...kind of.  The law that would keep Florida in Daylight Saving Time year round has been approved by the legislature and Gov. Scott, but it still needs the approval of Congress.  No word on when or if that will happen.
