Memorial Service For Palm Beach County Sheriff's K-9 Cigo

For Protecting the Palm Beaches, we honor a dog referred to as a "true hero" by the commander of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit.

Cigo was the first PBSO K-9 to be killed in the line of duty when he was shot outside the Mall at Wellington Green last month.

Lieutenant Michael Kletzky was one of several speakers at a public memorial for Cigo at the Coral Sky Amphitheater on Thursday.

"On Christmas eve, K-9 Cigo gave his life doing what he loved doing...catching bad guys.  He made the ultimate sacrifice that night.  He gave his life protecting deputies in the performance of their duties."

The service was complete with the Sheriff's Honor Guard, a fly-over and Sheriff Ric Bradshaw posthumously presenting Cigo with the Medal of Honor.

The three year old patrol and explosives detection dog also served on the team that protects President Trump when he's in town.

Deputies were attempting to arrest two men on an unrelated attempted murder charge when one of the suspects tried to run.  Cigo was in pursuit when Alvarez fired at him.

Cigo was cremated and his remains are with his handler, Deputy Ryan Soriano.
