The heart-shaped candies that feature sayings like "Be Mine" and "Let's Kiss" won't be in stores this Valentine's Day.
Sweethearts, a longtime tradition for Valentine's to give to each other, are on a brief hiatus this year. That's because the company that purchased the brand from NECCO, a candy company out of New England, is taking over production of the Sweethearts and NECCO Wafers.
NECCO shut down last July and Spangler Candy Company picked up those brands, but there wasn't enough time between the date of purchase and Valentine's Day to get Sweethearts on the shelves.
NECCO had been making Sweethearts since 1886 and in recent years was producing 100,000 pounds of the candy per day.
Good news: You can still find Sweethearts for purchase online, but those are left over from previous years, so watch the expiration date on the package.
Spangler says they'll be relaunching the candies in time for Valentine's Day 2020. Meanwhile, those NECCO Wafers are also not available in stores until sometime later this year.
