Protecting Your Pets This 4th Of July

Animal Rescue Centres Feel The Strain After Christmas Pets Are Abandoned

Pets are not fans of things that go "boom!"

With that in mind, Elizabeth Harfmann with Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control says to protect your animals to ensure they don't run out while you're celebrating July 4th.

"Fourth of July and any kind of holiday that has fireworks involved tend to be our highest intake days of the year. July 5th we have more intakes from lost pets being spooked by fireworks than any other day of the year."

If you're having a group of friends and family over, she says it's a good idea to keep your pet in a quiet room, away from all of the excitement. In addition to keeping your dog or cat happy because the sound of fireworks will be muffled, that will also keep your pet from running out any doors that may be left open.

If you're heading out to see the fireworks, Harfmann suggests putting your pet in a crate, in that quiet room, while you're gone.

Also, make sure your cat or dog has an I.D. tag, in case he or she gets loose.
