Two Palm Beach County charter schools are suing the school district over a new property tax approved by voters in November that the lawsuit claims is illegally discriminating against students who don't attend traditional public schools.

The estimated $200 million the new tax is expected to bring in annually is aimed at raising teachers' salaries and enhancing campus security, but it will only be shared by the 180 district-operated schools.

Charter schools are exempt from the benefits of the tax and the suit filed by the Palm Beach Maritime Academy and the Academy for Positive Learning claims that violates state law.

The schools demand that a judge either order the district to share the money with the county's 49 charters or declare the tax illegal and void it.
