Finishing touches are being made to the State of the Union address leading up to the event tonight.

A team of White House advisers and speechwriters typically spend weeks preparing notes and drafts for the annual speech.

The White House says Trump is aiming to provide and aspirational and visionary path for America, and is likely to make a call for bipartisan support on a variety of issues.

Trump will face a divided Congress for the first time as Democrats took control of the House last month.

Senior White House adviser Kellyanne Conway says Trump will call for an end to the politics of resistance and retribution.

Former candidate for Governor in Georgia Stacey Abrams will deliver the Democratic response.
