Among the more than 2.4 million Americans who filed first time claims for unemployment benefits last week were 224,000 Floridians, according to data from the U.S. Labor Dept.
Only California and New York had more new jobless claims and the 224k puts the number of those filing for benefits during the pandemic at around 2 million statewide.
This week, Gov. DeSantis claimed that more than 97-percent of eligible applicants have been processed or received payments, even as media across the state continue getting thousands of complaints that the unemployment website keeps crashing, or that people can't get through to anyone over the phone.
The 2.4 million jobs claims filed around the U.S. last week means that nearly 40 million Americans have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 crisis.
