President's approval and our view of the direction of the country

The President's approval and our view of the direction of the country for April 27th

Bottom Line: This is a weekly story to get a reality/temperature check regarding what's really going on with public opinion of the President and our view of the direction of the country. First here's the high point, low point and current ratings for President Trump...

  • Trump's lowest ratings: 37% approval and 59% disapproval: -22% (8/4/17)

  • Trump highest approval ratings 45% approval and 43% disapproval +2% (1/27/17):

  • Trump's current ratings: 43% approval and 53% disapproval: -10%

President Trump's approval rating rose by two points this week and is the highest it's been since early May of last year. The economy, handling of the Syrian conflict, etc., have brought about a bit more acceptance. But still, the bigger story is the difference based on political engagement.

As I've been tracking for many months... The more likely someone is to vote, the higher the President's overall approval rating.

  • With adult only samples his rating over the past week averaged: 39%

  • Registered voters: 42%

  • Likely voters: 48%

It's not the 12-point gap of a few weeks ago but clearly there's a significant divide based on engagement. The narrative remains solidly intact...the more engaged and informed one is - the higher their approval of the President.

Looking at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%

  • Wrong Track: 59%

  • Net: -29%

Last Week:

  • Right Direction: 36%

  • Wrong Track: 56%

  • Net: -20%

And Today:

  • Right Direction: 36%

  • Wrong Track: 55%

  • Net: -19%

Change: +10% under Trump & +1% over the previous update.

For the second consecutive week we're seeing a bit more optimism regarding the direction of our country.
