State Rep. Matt Willhite Wants Special Session On School Safety Funding

A State Representative from Royal Palm Beach is leading the push for a special session in Tallahassee.

Matt Willhite wants legislators to get together an increase appropriations to school districts.  He claims the cost of implementing the safety provisions of the Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Act have exceeded expectations and schools need help.

The Palm Beach County School District says the state funding provided by the law is just enough to cover salaries and benefits for 75 new officers who will be hired by the School District Police Department, potentially leaving the district $3 million short and administrators are left to figure out how to pay for the equipment and possibly even vehicles for the officers.

A property tax hike is being discussed next month.
