President Trump's approval & our view of the direction of the country

President Trump's approval & our view of the direction of the country

Bottom Line: This is a weekly story to get a reality/temperature check regarding what's really going on with public opinion of the President and our view of the direction of the country. First here's the high point, low point and current ratings for President Trump...

  • Trump's lowest ratings: 37% approval and 59% disapproval: -22% (8/4/17)
  • Trump highest approval ratings 45% approval and 43% disapproval (1/27/17): +2%
  •  Trump's current ratings: 43% approval and 53% disapproval: -10%

The net approval rating remains unchanged this week with a 1% dip in both approval and disapproval but as we’re nearing 2019 – that doesn’t even begin to tell the real story of what’s happening here. As has been the case throughout his term thus far, the more informed and engaged someone is politically – the more likely they are to approve of President Trump. What’s different is how huge the gap has now become.

  • With adult only samples his rating over the past week averaged: 40%
  • Registered voters: 46%
  • Likely voters: 50%

For comparison's sake his approval rating is one point below President Obama's average approval rating on this date in his second year in office but is six points higher with likely voters.

Looking at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%
  • Wrong Track: 59%
  • Net: -29%

Today:

  • Right Direction: 39%
  • Wrong Track: 54%
  • Net: -15%

Change: +14% under Trump & +2% over a week ago

A bit of bump here after steep declines in the wake of the midterm elections. Given the divided Congress it’ll be interested to see what the impact will be in 2019.

Until next week...
