Southwest Border Detentions skyrocket
Bottom Line: Right along my biggest frustration with the southern border debate has been that there shouldn’t be a debate. It’s the Border Patrol that’s requested additional physical barriers for years. It’s just that President Trump actually listened to them. Anyone who says that we don’t need additional physical border protection isn’t standing in opposition to the president. They stand in opposition to our Border Patrol tasked with keeping us safe. By denying them the resources they say they need to do their job effectively you’re essentially denying soldiers in battle the resources they say they need on the battlefield. It’s reprehensible, inexcusable.
What’s more is that the problem is currently skyrocketing making the need more immediate. Here are a couple of numbers that tell the story.
Total Southwest Border Apprehensions:
- 2017: 415,000
- 2018: 521,000
That’s right, there were 106,000 more detentions at the southern border last year over the prior year for an increase of 26% more detentions. But the surge didn’t just spike last year, it’s still rising.
Over the four most recent months overall detentions total more than 242,000 – 60% higher than 2018! To put it another way...We’re now averaging a total of 2,017 detentions per day at our Southwest border. That’s not a crisis? And if we’re seeing detentions spiking by 60%, how many people are illegally getting through without being detected?
The only mandated responsibility of our federal government is to protect us. Every federal politician standing in opposition to our border protection requested by our Border Patrol is violating their oath to the Constitution and is willingly putting all of us at risk in the name of politics.
