Border Crisis – Record murders in Mexico

Bottom Line: According to DHS records from the prior year’s detentions at the southern border 62% of those detained are from a different continent. In fact, illegal immigrants from all continents have been detained at the southern border over the last year, including people from countries that are on the State Department’s terror watch list. In fact, according to the most recent profile of the “Unauthorized Immigrant Population” by the Migration Policy Institute here’s the breakout of illegal immigrants that’d made their way to the US.

  • North America: 53%
  • Asia: 16%
  • Central America: 14%
  • South America: 6%
  • Europe: 5%
  • Africa: 3%
  • Islands: 3%

While we have illegal immigrants from around the world, including numerous countries on the terror watch list, Mexico remains the most common country of illegal immigrants entering the US. Perhaps you’ve heard that MS-13 gang members from Mexico have been among those detained illegals crossing the border. Here’s the latest reason to be concerned about them and the crisis at our southern border. A record number of murders occurred in Mexico in the first six months of 2019.

According to government statistics, murders in Mexico were up a stunning 5.3% year over year with 17,608 murders in the first half of the year. That’s an average of 96 murders per day! Yes, we have problems with caravans from various countries. Yes, we have concerns with undocumented people from countries that sponsor terror, but it appears we should be at least as concerned with where a majority of illegal immigrants, typically come from. It’s a reminder that protecting our borders isn’t just a matter of law but safety.
