Florida's recap – Highlights from around the state – August 28th

- While there’s a fair amount of disagreement with leading computer models, Dorian remains a threat to Florida with most of the state still appearing in the cone of uncertainty with the intensity forecast having been upgraded to a potential hurricane at landfall Monday.
- The Florida Division of Elections held a workshop regarding security procedures for voting systems. Ten Election Supervisors from around the state attended including Miami-Dade's representing South Florida (and the state’s largest office). Cyber security was a top issue being addressed on back of two counties previously having had information accessed from an outside entity believed to have been from Russia last year. The state has allocated $14.5 million in grants to improve security across the state.
- The tiny home trend may be coming to Florida. The Florida Building Commission has proposed new regulations that would allow for homes 400 square feet or smaller to be recognized and regulated as “tiny homes”. If approved the state would be tasked with building code standards that would likely be the stickiest in the country given Florida’s hurricane risk.
- The Broward School District decided not to revoke the charter of Ben Gamla Charter School for a potential violation of state law requiring at least one-armed guard per school. Officials stated they did have an armed security guard and only a single point of entry. This comes a week after Broward revoked the charter of Championship Academy of Distinction at Davie. Broward remains the only district in the state with schools in non-compliance of state law according to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Safety Commission.
