- Florida’s Blue-Green Algae Task force has issued its first formal recommendations to the state. They include increased regulation and oversight of septic tanks and stormwater systems throughout the state. Florida has 2.5 million septic tanks and formal inspections haven’t taken place since 2012. Miami-Dade is the epicenter of the stormwater issues with an aged system that’s already been ordered to modernize as part of seven-year $1.6 billion project. The increasingly frequent beach closures in South Florida are commonly as result of contamination from stormwater system failure.
- The Florida Turnpike begins a multi-year widening project that will result in lane closures for stretches from SR 821 to NW 106th street
- Researchers from the University of Central Florida have teamed with digital camera company Imec to create a camera that uses wavelengths to help track pythons in the Everglades. By attaching the camera to drones, hunters can locate pythons that they otherwise can’t track with cameras due to snakes being cold-blooded.
