Is Cannabis not all it’s cracked up to be?

Bottom Line: Few fads have caught on as quickly as the cannabis craze for healthcare. Marijuana is anything but new but the treatment and growth in Florida and across the country has been incredible. In Florida, we have the second fastest growth rate in the country with over 600 new patients added daily. But here’s a question that might be worth considering. Is cannabis really what it’s cracked up to be?

A significant study of 83 prior studies published in the medical journal The Lancet Psychiatry, had a significant takeaway. Little evidence exists that medical cannabinoids are either safe or effective for treating:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Psychosis

Other than that, it’s great? Here’s the point. And it’s true of a lot of new products that hit the market. There are a lot of people looking for help for any number of issues that may ail them. Products that make promises to assist quickly become attractive options and before you know it millions are using them. Just as has been the case with so many false promises for magic treatments before that failed to pan out, it’s possible cannabis is another. There’s no question what THC will do in the short term but if you’re looking for real medical assistance – this study of dozens of studies - suggests there might be much less to the medical marijuana story than meets the eye.
