  • According to Tobacco Free Florida high school smoking rates dropped to a record low 2.1% (down from 3.5% in the prior year), however a record number of students are now vaping in Florida – 25%, up 58% year over year
  • Lake County passed a resolution to declare itself a “2nd Amendment Sanctuary”, implying that if sweeping gun control measures were passed inhibiting the right to legally possess, the county wouldn’t abide by the law. Several local governments across the country have passed similar policy. Lake County is the first in Florida.
  • Miami-Dade launched an anti-sex trafficking campaign aimed to curb trafficking during the Super Bowl – which has been cited to be the single worst human trafficking event on earth. The campaign’s message is “Buy Sex, Be Exposed” and includes a hotline for tips - 305-FIX-STOP.
  • AG Ashley Moody is asking a federal judge to dismiss the legal challenge by the greyhound racing industry, to Florida’s racing ban, which passed as a constitutional amendment last year. 
  • Florida’s Supreme Court heard arguments over whether the restitution of felons voting rights should include financial restitution. Justices homed in on arguments brought before the court in 2017 when advocates, including the legal counsel arguing for the proposed amendment, testified before the court that financial restitution would be included.
