International Symposium On First Responder Trauma Amid Suicide Epidemic

A forum on first responder trauma is being held on Friday, on back of a report that at least 228 officers took their own lives last year.

That's the highest number in the four years that a non-profit has been tracking police suicides.

Cindy Goss, outreach coordinator with Futures Recovery Healthcare, says seeking help for stress or depression is something a lot of cops and firefighters just won't do.

"So it's kind of ingrained in them that they're strong, robotic, take control and their job is to take care of everybody else."

She says trauma experienced by first responders is responsible for epidemic rates of mental health disorders and addiction, as well as suicide.

The event is open to the public at the Palm Beach State College Duncan Theater in Lake Worth.

It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and there is no admission fee.
