Coronavirus update – April 6th
Bottom Line: This daily update is designed to put everything in perspective with straight-forward facts. No hyperbole, no misinformation, no “bad math”. The weekend was filled with additional cases, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson being hospitalized after having contracted COVID-19 and a strong message from US Surgeon General Jerome Adams. America’s Doctor warned that this week will be the hardest and saddest for most Americans. He likened what we’re set to experience as our Pearl Harbor and 9/11 moment of the coronavirus crisis while saying there was light at the end of this tunnel on Fox News Sunday.
Speaking of improvement, if only for a day - New York had fewer deaths reported on Sunday than Saturday. It was the first improvement from one day to the next since the onset of the issues in New York. New York state, on its own, is third in the world in diagnosed cases behind Italy and Spain.
Here’s where we now stand in Florida:
- 12,350 cases – 221 deaths (specific Florida recoveries aren’t disclosed)
Nationally:
- 336,851 cases – 9,620 deaths – 17,977 recovered
Worldwide:
- 1,276,117 – 69,509 deaths – 265,943 recovered
We experienced more than 258k additional cases worldwide over the weekend, with 91k new cases in the US and over 3,500 deaths. The most disconcerting aspect of the virus remains the death/recovery rate based on closed cases. The death rate rose to 21% worldwide over the weekend. This after having reached a low of 6% about a month ago. We’ve seen the death rate rise as the reach of the virus grows. The common pattern with the virus spreading is an increase in death rates with vulnerable early on, followed by improving rates overtime as people begin to recover. Hopefully we begin to see progress soon. The traditional flu season generally ends in April.
