Coronavirus update – June 1st
Bottom Line: This daily update is designed to put everything in perspective with straight-forward facts. No hyperbole, no misinformation, no nonsense. Largely due to the continued spikes in new cases in Brazil and Russia,new cases worldwide continued to pace near their highest levels of the pandemic. There were more new diagnosed cases worldwide this past weekend than any weekend prior during this pandemic – with over 120,000 new daily cases diagnosed. It’s a reminder that while we continue to make progress in the United States, the threat is still worsening outside of our country. It also illustrates some of the challenges we currently face and could for the foreseeable with international travel.
In the US, we received new data on the Infection Fatality Rate, or death rate. According to official government statistics the death rate in the United States has been 1.4% for those who’ve contracted COVID-19. Total cases in the United States were right in line with the two-week trendline over the weekend. With over 106,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19, it is the deadliest virus in the United States since the 1918 pandemic which killed an estimated 500,000 people.
Here’s where we stand as of now...
Worldwide:
- 6,278,405 – 374,157 deaths – 2,852,761 recovered
Nationally:
- 1,837,170 cases – 106,195 deaths – 599,867 recovered
Florida:
- 56,163 cases – 2,452 deaths
In Florida, we saw a bit of an increase in new cases over the weekend – just above the recent trendline. This as we’re now a month into reopening in most of the state. For the first time, the Florida Department of Health released antibody test information and it revealed 4.4% of those tested positive COVID-19 antibodies – that compares to 12.3% in New York state.
Florida continues to outperform the country as a whole. We’re the third most populous state but just 9th in total cases and 11th in deaths. We’ve also tested more aggressively than most states, with only New York having tested more than Florida. More than half of all of Florida’s cases remain in the tri-county area with Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach having the most cases in the state in that order.
The overall positive test rate in Florida dropped to another new low over the weekend. 5.5%-exactly half of the peak rate of 11%. As a reminder, the newest diagnosed cases are new cases obtained through community spread. This reinforces the importance of adhering to the warnings of public officials including social distancing and wearing masks in public. The average age of someone diagnosed with COVID-19 in Florida is 54.
