Florida News that impacts you – August 28th
Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.
- If it feels like you’re seeing more political advertising than ever – it’s not your imagination. Political advertising in Florida, totaling more than $137 million this year, is #1 nationally and already more than was spent during the 2016 election cycle.
- With a second consecutive day of just over 3,200 new COVID-19 cases reported on Thursday – Florida's weekly average case count dropped again to the lowest level since June 22nd.
- Florida’s medical marijuana dispensaries will now be able to sell THC infused edibles - including brownies and candy - provided that they’re not packaged in a way that would theoretically entice minors. The Florida Department of Health issued new guidelines for “medical” marijuana in the state which paved the path for the expansion of marijuana sales.
- Renatha Francis will become a Florida Supreme Court Justice. The DeSantis appointee had her eligibility challenged earlier this year by Democrat state Representative Geraldine Thompson. Florida law states a Supreme Court Justice must be a member of the Florida bar for 10 years before becoming eligible. Francis will have been a member of the bar for over ten years by the time she’s sworn in, however she was just short of that mark at the time of the appointment. Florida’s Supreme Court ruled that the challenge had merit however the remedy sought by the suit wasn’t valid for the purpose of preventing Francis from ascending to the court. Thus, the appointment stands.
