As Palm Beach County school kids return to class after the Martin Luther King holiday, the school board is getting ready to make next year's school calendar official...and not everyone is happy about it.
For starters, this year's summer break is expected to be three weeks shorter than usual...down to seven weeks. The last day of school was pushed back to June 18th, after the start of the school year was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.
The proposed start of the 2021-22 academic year is August 10th, which is the earliest date permitted by law. Some parents are upset, claiming that will disrupt out of state summer camps. But with the so-called "COVID slide," or a slip in grades for students learning from home, district officials want kids to get back to school as quickly as possible.
There is also likely to be a shortened winter break for the next couple of years. With Christmas falling on a Saturday this year, the break is expected to go from 16 days to 13.
