Mayors In The Glades Call Governor's Publix Plan "Unconscionable"

The mayors of three western Palm Beach County cities have written a letter to Governor DeSantis, urging him to find a more convenient way for residents of the Glades to get their COVID-19 vaccine.

Health officials say the county's 67 Publix pharmacies are now the primary way for residents to get vaccinated, but the mayors of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay tell the governor that the plan doesn't work for their communities.

They point out in the letter that the nearest Publix to Belle Glade is 25 miles away, 27 miles for Pahokee and 32 miles for South Bay.

The mayors also note that many of the residents in the Glades don't own vehicles and would have to take public transportation an average of 28 miles each way to get inoculated.

They're requesting that DeSantis create a new plan that provides "convenient vaccine access to rural, outlying areas" or have the state partner with CVS or Walgreens, which have locations more accessible to residents.

The letter states that the current plan is quote "simply unacceptable, and quite frankly, unconscionable."
