Lots of good COVID news for Floridians

Bottom Line: It’s a bit of an oxymoron to say “good COVID news”, I know. Good news would be that it’s no longer news. But there really is a lot that’s being learned along with current trends in Florida that are leading to good news cycle with the pandemic. Consider...

  • Florida’s weekly trend for cases is the lowest it’s been since mid-November
  • We’re past the traditional peak of flu season (which became the season of COVID)
  • Miami’s Jackson Health became the first major health system in Florida to announce supplies of vaccines exceeding demand for those eligible under Florida’s Phase 1 program
  • Florida has enough capacity in the system to vaccinate every Floridian who wants a vaccine by the end of March (meaning it’s only vaccine supply that’s a limiting factor currently)
  • Johnson & Johnson said it can rollout 20 million vaccines by the end of March if approved
  • Two studies have indicated that even one dose of any of the available vaccines reduce hospitalizations of COVID positive patients by over 70%

I could continue but you get the idea. Last week I indicated that based on the arc of the traditional flu season and recent trends within Florida, that we’d likely passed the peak of the pandemic. Literally all of the news which has happened since has only reinforced that notion. There’s a way to go still but there’s plenty of realistic room for legitimate optimism.
