The city of Boca Raton is in our Election Spotlight.
Jeremy Rodgers was deployed overseas with the U.S. Navy and left his City Council seat vacant. Yvette Drucker was appointed to fill out the remainder of his term. She's also officially running to keep Seat C.
Drucker says she may be a fresh face on the council, jumping on in November, but not in the city of Boca.
"I've been in the community a lot. I've been serving in non-profit boards, in over 19 boards, giving back. Advocacy is a passion of mine, and community service."
Drucker worked for 13 years in human resources management.
Three people are challenging Drucker, including Bernard Korn who has run unsuccessfully for mayor twice in the past few years.
He's also running for Rick Scott's U.S. Senate seat.
Korn continues to make claims of corruption against the city council and says there are attempts underway to keep him from being on it.
We asked him how the city performed in its coronavirus response.
"Terrible! Horrible! They went around like dictators and ordered businesses to be closed. They gave out fines. Out of control with the COVID!"
Josie Machovec grew up in Boca Raton, before spending a couple of years in the Israeli Defense Forces.
Later, she worked in sales and customer service and is a stay-at-home mom to three young children these days, and has recently gotten into politics.
"I just have seen over this last year how influential our local government is on our daily lives when it came to things like the lockdowns and school closures and that kind of stuff."
Machovec is one of four people who sued the county last year over the mask mandate.
The fourth candidate is Constance Scott, who previously served on the council from 2009 to 2015.
She is currently the director of local relations for FAU, but says she'll resign if she wins so she can remain focused on the city.
"I bring knowledge, experience...one of the things that has been lacking, I bring leadership to the city council that has been lacking what I believe for about the last five years. I'm 100 percent in for Boca and the city's future."
Scott says her previous work experience in the financial services industry would come in handy on the city council.
This race is open to all registered voters living in the city of Boca Raton.
