Top Three Takeaways – March 11th, 2021

  1. Altered sense of reality. That phrase triggers what thought first to you? That’s kind of my point. It could apply to so many aspects of our society right now. The pandemic, the economy, cancel-culture, heck Joe Biden being President of the United States despite seemingly being unable to piece together successive coherent thoughts (it’ll be interesting to see how his primetime address on COVID goes tonight). There are so many aspects of our society today that seem somewhat unreal, at least based upon the way most of us were raised. But that’s not what let me to this takeaway today. It was a study on selfies that found this: 90 percent of 175 surveyed young women and nonbinary people say they filter or edit all of their photos before posting them online. Now I could focus on the irony and absurdity of “nonbinary” people having self-image concerns – its redundancy was lost on the PC researchers. The bottom line is this, what does it say about our sense of reality and self-worth when 90% of girls (and identifiers?) feel like they need to alter their image before sharing it with others? What does it say about potentially misplaced priorities? And isn’t vanity one of the seven deadly sins? It’s the latest example of how the further removed from God our society becomes, the more unhappy with ourselves we become - thus creating our altered sense of reality. A reality in which we lack the answers but assume we have them becoming less happy with all aspects of our lives in the process. Maybe if we returned to having faith in God rather than prioritizing social media likes and shares, we’d all be a bit happier with reality. I know a lot of fathers worry about their daughters in today’s culture. When was the last time you engaged your children regarding thier faith? And if they don’t have faith in God, what do they have faith in? It’s better late than never.
  2. Speaking of faith... How much do you have in Congress to do the right thing by you right now? I'm with you but there’s a chance that maybe, just maybe this will be the year they choose to recognize Florida’s sovereignty. It’s been three years since Florida passed the law allowing us to put an end to the anti-science time changes. And for three fruitless years Senator Rubio and later Scott pushed to have Congress recognize our law. Could this finally be the year? Could this weekend finally be the last time we pretend there are 363 days with 24 hours but one with 25 and another with 23 each year? I’m not holding my breath, but I am more optimistic than I’ve been and that’s because it’s now bipartisan. Not that the length of a day has ever been a partisan issue but we simply needed some Democrats in Congress to care. And now at least a few do. Senator Rubio’s Sunshine Protection Act which would allow Florida to forever remain in Daylight Saving Time, is being co-sponsored by Democrats Sheldon Whitehouse, Ron Wyden and Ed Markey. Quoting Rubio: The call to end the antiquated practice of clock changing is gaining momentum throughout the nation. Studies have shown many benefits of a year-round Daylight Saving Time, which is why the Florida legislature voted to make it permanent in 2018. I’m proud to reintroduce this bipartisan bill to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, and give our nation’s families more stability throughout the year. And to that I say Amen.
  3. 79 and sunny. That's our forecast today. Take some time to enjoy it. The rest of the world wishes they could.
