The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office held its annual Fallen Deputy Memorial this week.
They added a new name to the Memorial Wall outside the Sheriff's Office.
Detective Clarence "Bud" Backherms died in April 2019 from longterm health problems that stemmed from him being shot back in 1990 outside a truck stop on U.S. 27.
During Wednesday's ceremony, Major Ronald Mattino also acknowledged the toll the pandemic has taken on the force.
"For the last year and a half the coronavirus pandemic had an unprecedented impact on how we live and work, limiting our ability to interact with others and freely move about the world. Tragically it also affected our ability to pay tribute to the ones that we love who we lost."
Major Mattino went on to name the eight PBSO employees who lost their battles with COVID.
"May God bless the memory of the loved ones here. They remain in our hearts forever."
