Top Three Takeaways – June 21st, 2021
- It’s much bigger than cruises. The win by Florida over the CDC on Friday is about so much more than the cruise industry and Florida. An unelected body of scientists in Atlanta retain no constitutional authority to control industries or our lives. As I brought you last Thursday, not only is the CDC’s no sail order unconstitutional – the unconstitutional actions expanded far beyond our ports with other unconstitutional CDC actions. No, the case is not a done deal, this was preliminary, however US District Judge Steven Merryday’s summation was quite clear and right in line with what I cited last week: This order finds that Florida is highly likely to prevail on the merits of the claim that CDC’s conditional sailing order and the implementing orders exceed the authority delegated to CDC. That’s because it’s quite constitutionally clear. Constitutional law is often challenging, however this concept isn’t... Our rights and freedoms can’t be taken away from us by unelected officials. Even if you never get on a cruise ship again, what’s happening here matters more than even the attention it’s received. We should all be grateful to Governor DeSantis and Attorney General Ashley Moody attacking the false premise of the CDC’s “no sail” order, as opposed to arguing over details of it. As you’ll hear me say...if the premise of anything is false, anything built on it is too.
- Rush to judgement. One way to make a horrible situation worse is to jump to conclusions and espouse false extremes. That’s exactly what Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis did Saturday when he had the audacity to say: This is a terrorist attack against the LGBT community. This is exactly what it is. Hardly an accident. It was deliberate, it was premeditated, and it was targeted against a specific person. Luckily they missed that person, but unfortunately, they hit two other people. The person to which he was referring was of course Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz. One person lying dead, and another being seriously injured in Saturday’s Stonewall Pride Parade is bad enough. Having one of South Florida’s most prominent leaders front-running the notion of a terrorist attack where there’s no known evidence it was is likewise awful. It spawned worldwide headlines like this: A terrorist attack against the LGBT Community. Of course, ignored by the mayor was the pride flag flown on the truck, the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus shirt worn by the driver and the knowledge that he was a member of the Chorus and a parade participant. There’s simply no excuse for what Trantalis did here and it calls into question his overall judgement.
