Florida News That Impacts You – September 16th, 2022 

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida. Gas prices continued lower through the weekend.  

  • The statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded remains $3.44 per gallon, prices have remained flat throughout the week. In Southeast Florida prices range from an average low of $3.47 per gallon in Broward to an average high of $3.63 per gallon in the Palm Beaches. 
  • New COVID-19 cases are remaining near their lowest levels since late April in Florida. Florida’s weekly trend for daily COVID-19 cases is currently 3,835 daily cases
  • Governor DeSantis has announced an expanded CDL, or Commercial Driver's License, training program. $8.2 million allocated by the Legislature has been appropriated to five colleges to expand training programs by 1,200 students per year. An additional $12 million is being allocated to school districts, colleges outside of the five leading the initiative, and private training programs to help facilitate early training for CDLs.  
  • President Biden has nominated two new U.S. attorneys in Florida, including the Southern District of Florida. Notably the existing US attorney for the Southern District, Juan Gonzalez, is involved in the prosecution of the Mar-a-Lago raid. Gonzalez had been a federal prosecutor within the Southern District since 1998. Simultaneously, Biden nominated a new attorney for the Middle District of Florida which is involved in the investigation into Congressman Matt Gaetz. The nominees must be confirmed by the Senate.
