- The tropics remain active with three disturbances led by Hurricane Lee and Hurricane Margot. A third disturbance is expected to develop into a tropical storm and possibly a hurricane over the coming week. Currently only Hurricane Lee poses a potential threat to populated areas as it’s expected to pass to the west of Bermuda with the potential to impact coastal areas in the northeast in Maine and Nova Scotia this weekend as a tropical storm.
- Palm Beach County’s Department of Housing and Economic Development has announced a new initiative which will provide first time home buyers up to $100,000 towards the purchase of a home. The HOME Investment Partnerships Program will provide income eligible residents with a grant to assist with the purchase and renovation of a property on a sliding scale based on income. The total allocation of funds is $4,000,000 and they’ll be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The application launch date is October 10th at 8:00 am.
- Researchers and conservationists are continuing to document record numbers of sea turtle nests along the Treasure Coast. Record numbers of nests had previously been documented in St. Lucie County and now record numbers of nests have been documented in Martin and Indian River Counties as well. Researchers are citing improved conservation efforts dating back to the 90’s as the positive catalysts. The age of full maturity of sea turtles is approximately 25 years.
- Gas prices were flat Tuesday. Statewide the average price for regular unleaded is $3.59 per gallon – 8 cents lower than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.77 per gallon, which is the seventh highest price in the state (the best relative pricing of the year for our area).
