- The tropics remain active with four disturbances led Hurricane Lee and Hurricane Margot. A disturbance is expected to develop into a tropical storm and possibly a hurricane in the coming days. Currently only Hurricane Lee poses a potential threat to populated areas. It’s passed to the west of Bermuda, where there’s a tropical storm warning, with the potential to impact coastal areas in the northeast in Maine and Nova Scotia this weekend as a tropical storm. Hurricane watches have been issued for those areas.
- A pod of Orca’s was spotted by fishermen off the coast of Fort Pierce who captured video of the sighting. This comes weeks after another rare sighting off of the Lower Keys. According to NOAA there are two stocks of orcas in the vicinity. What they call the North Atlantic stock and the Gulf of Mexico stock. The orcas are believed to be following schools of tuna.
- South Florida’s inflation rate remains the highest in the country. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has updated the regional CPI report for the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro which shows prices having increased by 7.8% annually through August. The rise marks a two month increase from a 6.9% rate in June. South Florida’s inflation rate has been 6.9% or higher since December of 2021.
- Gas prices jumped over the past day. Statewide the average price for regular unleaded is $3.64 per gallon – 6 cents higher than yesterday and a penny higher than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.77 per gallon, which is the sixth highest price in the state.
