Florida News That Impacts You – September 19th, 2023

  • Three disturbances remain active in the Atlantic, including one just off of Florida’s east coast. Hurricane Nigel is making its way north through the mid-Atlantic and has the potential to eventually impact Iceland as a tropical storm. There’s another disturbance off the coast of Africa that’s expected to develop into a tropical storm or hurricane over the coming week. The disturbance stalled off of our coast, which has been impacting our weather, is currently being given a 30% chance of development over the next week.  
  • Two arrests have been made in the recent spate of stolen Jeep parts from parking lots. The Broward Sheriff’s office arrested 22-year-old Jonathan Quintero and 25-year-old Diogenes Morel Martinez when detectives at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport saw the duo steal parts from Jeep vehicles in the long-term parking lot. Detectives then followed them to Sawgrass Mills Mall where they attempted similar crimes and were arrested. The two are believed to be responsible for the recent theft of Jeep parts in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami Dade – commonly at airport parking lots.  
  • Citizens Property Insurance, the state’s insurer of last resort, has finalized a revised plan seeking 11.5% increases in policy premiums which would take effect for policy renewals effective December 16th. The state’s largest insurer, with over 1.3 million in force policies, had a previous plan for increases rejected by state regulators. Citizens is in the process of shedding over 130,000 policies to three private insurers through the end of November.  
  • Gas prices are a penny lower today. Statewide the average price for regular unleaded is $3.68 per gallon – 9 cents higher than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.84 per gallon, which is the highest price in the state.
