- Recent movers in the state legislative session included: the Online Protections for Minors bill which would ban many social media accounts for those under 16. An amended version of the bill passed in a divided senate vote before passing nearly unanimously in the House. Under the amended version those under 16 could use social media provided, that providers drop “engagement” tactics that are associated with addictive behavior. Governor DeSantis expressed concern about the legislation that’s now on the way to his desk saying: Parents need to have a role in this. We can’t say 100% of the uses are bad. It’s still under negotiation. We’re working. The Traveling Across County Lines to Commit Criminal Offenses bill, which enhances penalties for crimes committed outside of one’s home county, passed the House with broad bi-partisan support. Likewise, the Security for Jewish Day Schools and Preschools bill, which would make the current state funding for enhanced school security for Jewish schools recurring, passed with broad support.
- While the state of Florida reported a slight decline in tourism from record levels in 2022, Discover the Palm Beaches has reported another record year for Palm Beach County. According to the agency, visitation in the county increased by 2.5% over the past year.
- Palm Beach County commissioners have approved the parking of large commercial vehicles at residential properties in Loxahatchee and the Acreage. The updated code allows for each homeowner to park vehicles of up to 16,000 pounds at their residence.
- Palm Beach County is seeking homeowners to participate in the S.M.A.R.T, or support, marketing, assistance, rent & tenant, program to address homelessness. Under the program those with vacant rooms in their home or rental properties may work with the county to house homeless individuals with rent assistance that’s paid for by the county.
- Warmer weather today with highs in the upper 70’s – in line with what’s typical for this date. Slightly cooler weather is expected again throughout the weekend.
- Gas prices are a touch lower today. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is $3.35 per gallon - a penny lower than yesterday, though 2 cents higher than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.52 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.40 and in Indian River County the average is $3.37 per gallon.
