- Governor DeSantis issued a directive on Wednesday that all colleges and universities ensure commencement ceremonies are not canceled or disrupted. Additionally, he announced education safety funding for the upcoming fiscal year of $569 million for K-12 education, $20 million for Jewish Day Schools and $20 million for Florida’s historically Black colleges and universities.
- The Florida Department of Health in Martin County has issued a blue-green algae warning due to growth of the toxic algae discovered in Lake Okeechobee. Officials are warning to avoid contact with the water surrounding the algae, including with a personal watercraft. Officials are also warning against the consumption of shellfish from the lake.
- Renovations of Lake Worth Beaches’ historic Gulfstream Hotel are set to get underway next week. A groundbreaking ceremony has been scheduled next Tuesday at 4pm for the hotel which last operated in 2005.
- Indian River County held a workshop on Wednesday for residents regarding future development within the county. County commissioners are planning for 25% growth over the next 25 years and are actively seeking input on how to proceed with future development projects. Four additional workshops will be held with two on May 22nd and two on May 29th.
- Today will be the hottest day of the year thus far this year with a high around 90. That’s about seven degrees higher than usual for this date and still hotter temperatures are in store after today with mid-90’s possible on Friday.
- Gas prices dropped another two cents per gallon on Wednesday. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is currently $3.52 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.71 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.59 and in Indian River County the average is $3.46 per gallon.
