Florida News That Impacts You – September 17th, 2024

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Ryan Routh, the suspect in the second Trump assassination attempt at Trump International in West Palm Beach on Sunday, was booked on multiple federal charges Monday – with additional charges likely to be brought as the investigation continues. State Attorney Dave Aronberg, stated that his office no longer intends on pursing charges against Routh, stating that his office doesn’t have anything to do with the case after the federal government assumed the lead in the investigation and the prosecution. Governor DeSantis disagreed with Aronberg’s sentiment, however, stating that the state of Florida will conduct its own investigation, which will likely lead to charges at the state level as well.
  • The Palm Beach County Library and West Palm Beach Post Office will remain closed today while Summit Blvd. remains closed to traffic from the intersection of Summit and Congress Ave. to Kirk Road as the investigation into the Trump assassination attempt continues in the area. Authorities indicated Summit Blvd. may reopen later today.
  • On Monday, Governor DeSantis announced record refunds to Florida families through the Florida Prepaid program due to Florida’s college tuition rates having risen by the lowest amount in the country over the past decade. Over 1.2 million families have received a total of over $1 billion. In announcing the latest round of refunds DeSantis said: Because of our focus on academic achievement and fiscal responsibility, Florida has both the number one ranked higher education system and the lowest tuition in the country. Florida’s flexible college savings options like the Florida Prepaid program allow parents to get a head start on paying for the future, and even get money back when tuition stays low. And because I have ensured tuition has not been raised in Florida since I’ve become Governor, we have another round of refunds available for parents now.
  • It’ll be hot today and humid again today with showers possible throughout the day and highs in the upper 80’s. Temperatures will be about 4 degrees warmer than usual for this date. The National Hurricane Center is now only tracking one system. Tropical Depression Gordon is in the mid-Atlantic where it’s expected to remain throughout the week. It’s not a threat to populated areas.
  • After reaching the lowest price since January, gas prices rose four cents per gallon on Monday, although prices locally continued lower. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.13 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.28 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.08 and in Indian River County the average is $3.06 per gallon.
