November Hurricane History - 2024
Bottom Line: The finish line to hurricane season is in sight. As we start the final month of hurricane season, we do so with a total of 15 named storms having formed – four fewer than at the same point a year ago. Of course, three of those storms were hurricanes that made landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Debby, Helene and Milton making this an especially rough hurricane season for many.
Now, before discussing what typically happens in November, let’s start with a trivia question... Of the six months of hurricane season, which is the most inactive? If you answered November, you're incorrect. It’s June. November is the 2nd least active month of hurricane season and here's the actual breakdown of months based on activity:
- #1 September
- #2 August
- #3 October
- #4 July
- #5 November
- #6 June
Since tracking began in 1851:
- 93% of all tropical storms & hurricanes have happened prior to November
What does November generally bring? 93 tropical storms and 64 hurricanes. In other words, we average a tropical storm about every other year and a hurricane about every three years. You might say the wind is at our back as we look to close out hurricane season.
