  • The popular My Safe Florida Home program has reopened for applications with a priority placed on grants for older residents and low- and moderate-income homeowners. The four priority groups are those 60 and older with household incomes at or below 80% of the median income of their home county, group two is for a homeowner of any age with median income at 80% or below of their home country’s median income. Group three is for those 60 and older with household income below 120% of their median home county with Group four applying to those of any age at or below 120% of the median home county income. $280 million is available for grants for home hardening measures.  
  • A Stuart man has been arrested by Stuart PD for a fraudulent check cash scheme that allegedly defrauded retirees out of $500,000. The investigation dates back to last September when a fake check linked to a health savings account for a retired United Airlines pilot was found to have been bogus. The suspect, Henry Tyrone Harris Jr. has been charged with grand theft and uttering a forged instrument. 
  • Today is day four of the scheduled eight-day closure of Northlake Blvd. at Beeline Highway for CSX railroad crossing repairs. Delays of an hour or more are possible with detours of 21 and 34 miles serving as the only options for navigating around the closure. 
  • It'll be sunny, hot and humid again today with highs in the low 90’s, which is warmer than usual for this date, and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. More Saharan dust is on its way through the Caribbean today and with another plume tracking across the central Atlantic. Related... 
  • Activity has picked up considerably in the tropics with Tropical Storm Dexter continues to track away from the U.S. towards the northern mid-Atlantic. There’s a disturbance off the coast of Africa with a 50% chance of development later in the week and a disturbance off the southeast U.S. coastline with a 30% chance of development. That system is likely to eventually move onshore. 
  • Gas prices surged on Monday by 14 cents per gallon. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.08 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.19 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.13, St. Lucie is at $3.08, and in Indian River County the average is $3.11 per gallon.
