The President's approval & the direction of the country for April 6th

The President's approval and our view of the direction of the country for April 6th

Bottom Line: This is a weekly story to get a reality/temperature check regarding what's really going on with public opinion of the President and our view of the direction of the country. First here's the high point, low point and current ratings for President Trump...

  • Trump's lowest ratings: 37% approval and 59% disapproval: -22% (8/4/17)

  • Trump highest approval ratings 45% approval and 43% disapproval +2% (1/27/17):

  • Trump's current ratings: 43% approval and 54% disapproval: -11%

President Trump's approval rating rose by 2 points over a week ago and most notably has broken out to new highs among likely voters. The difference in approval based on engagement remains the biggest story when discussing President Trump's approval rating. As I've been tracking for many months... The more likely someone is to vote, the higher the President's overall approval rating and that's never been more apparent than with this week's ratings.

  • With adult only samples his rating over the past week averaged: 39%

  • Registered voters: 42%

  • Likely voters: 51%

12 points! That's the highest spread I've ever seen. Not just with this President but any. You also don't need me to tell you that there's a vast difference between a 39% and 51% approval rating either. It helps explain the dichotomy and strong feelings that often stand in contrast to one another these days. The more engaged and informed one is - the higher their view of the President.

Looking at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%

  • Wrong Track: 59%

  • Net: -29%

Last Week:

  • Right Direction: 37%

  • Wrong Track: 57%

  • Net: -20%

And Today:

  • Right Direction: 38%

  • Wrong Track: 56%

  • Net: -18%

Change: +11% under Trump & +2% over the previous update.

So, a bit of a bump in optimism this week as well. The two-point improvement also tracks with the President's approval rating. The jobs and wage growth we're seeing - it's easy to see why.
