Weekly political update – Your thoughts on Trump, Pelosi, Schumer & the country

Bottom Line: This is your weekly reality check. What's really going on with public opinion of the president and our view of the direction of the country? Here it is...

  • Trump's lowest ratings: 37% approval (8/4/17)
  • Trump highest approval ratings: 45% approval (5/10/19)
  • Trump's current ratings: 44% approval

A week ago, President Trump posted the highest average approval rating of his presidency. This week, after the Chinese trade tensions escalating, he’s off a point from those levels. Still, the economy remains strong, unemployment at 49-year lows and aside from the daily noise in the news media – things are pretty good. We do have a crisis at the border however and the president has unveiled his new immigration proposal. We’ll see where this conversation goes over the next week or so. Meanwhile progress continues to be made with the expansion of the border wall after the Pentagon announced an additional $1.5 billion being reallocated for border wall construction.

It’s been the case throughout his term thus far, that the more informed and engaged someone is politically, the more likely they are to approve of President Trump. That remains the case once again this week, but the gap has narrowed.

  • Adult only samples averaged: N/A
  • Registered voters: 43%
  • Likely voters: 48%

What you never hear reported are the ratings of the Democratic leaders opposing him. Let’s just say they’d need a huge push of support to simply catch President Trump’s approval ratings. Here’s the latest...

  • Pelosi: 38%
  • Schumer: 30%

What does that tell you about what’s really going on in this country? Pelosi is six points behind Trump and Schumer is 14 points behind the president in overall approval. Looking at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%

Today:

  • Right Direction: 38%

That’s down a point this week but we are still 8% collectively more optimistic than we were during the Obama administration.
