Law Enforcement Procedures Have Changed During The COVID-19 Pandemic

Local law enforcement agencies have had to change up the way they do business due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"When this whole thing started back in March, we ended up closing the lobby because we didn't want to have people coming in and possibly bringing anything in to the P.D."

Palm Springs Police Chief Tom Ceccarelli tells me his officers have been out making sure everyone knows about the county-wide orders in place.

"A lot of it's just been educating the public. We go out to businesses and make sure they're operating safely and properly."

And he says they handle many of their duties while practicing social distancing.

"We actually take reports over the phone. The officer will call or you can call us and we'll call you back. It's for minor calls. Basically we take all the information, what we do at the scene we would take from the person over the phone instead."

Ceccarelli says they're trying to limit interactions between officers and members of the community...for now.

"Even though we like to be part of the community, we're just trying to keep our officers safe because we're all critical employees and essential personnel."
