Florida’s voter registration by party – April 2021
Bottom Line: Florida’s voter registration trends in the wake of the 2020 election cycle were clear. Defections from both major political parties with Republicans hemorrhaging the most in our state. This was especially significant because Florida has continued to see a significant influx of new residents and registered voters. It was clear, tens of thousands of Floridians were turned off by both parties and opted for neither. As the calendar flipped to March did anything change?
The Florida Division of Elections is out with the monthly voter registration update and the survey says...
Changes in year-to-date voter registration information:
- DEM: -20,946 (same as prior month)
- GOP: -35,324 (+2,339 from prior month)
- NPA/Other: +48,133 (+13,608 from prior month)
The surge in registered NPA’s continues in Florida, though there’s improved news for Democrats and Republicans as both stopped the hemorrhaging of registered voters last month. Among partisans, Democrats are still outpacing Republicans for the year, though Republican registrations outpaced Democrats for the first time this year. One month is not a trend, though this is one... Over the past few decades, it’s been somewhat typical for NPA and minor parties to gain more voters in non-election years, but it’s unusual to see both major political parties lose voters to the extent they have in the first three months of this year.
The current breakout of registered voters looks like this...
- DEM: 36.4%
- GOP: 35.6%
- NPA/Other: 28%
Democrats maintain a sub-1% advantage over Republicans in voter registration but if this trend continues it could be that NPA’s and minor parties find parity with the two major parties. Until next month...
