Florida News That Impacts You – January 8th, 2024

  • Florida’s State Legislative Session commences at noon tomorrow following Governor DeSantis’ State-of-the State address. In advance of the start of the session a total of 1655 bills have been filed between the House and Senate. Typically, about 200 bills become law.  
  • The Republican Party of Florida is holding a special meeting today to vote on whether to remove Chairman Christian Ziegler as he’s currently under investigation for an allegation of rape. The state party suspended Ziegler in December demanding a resignation. Ziegler asserts his innocence and has refused to resign. He’s not been charged with a crime to date.  
  • Tri-Rail, which currently operates 18 train stops throughout Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, is adding a new stop in Downtown Miami this Saturday, the 13th. The MiamiCentral Station will commence with a “soft launch” consisting of 12 trains servicing the location before an eventual full schedule which will include a total of 26-weekday trains. 
  • Temperatures will remain below the seasonal norms today by a degree or two with winds picking up throughout the day in advance of a cold front which is expected to make its way into our area late Tuesday into Wednesday. 
  • Gas prices continued to rise through the weekend. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is $3.16 per gallon - 9 cents higher than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.30 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.22 and in Indian River County the average is $3.16 per gallon.
